Have you set your sights on promotion? Can you see yourself in a senior managers or directors role within a successful company? If yes, then you need to make sure that you are fully confident or at least develop leadership skills in advance so that you are prepared for the succession of challenges that will come your way. Many are tempted by taking on a promotion but the reality and demands that ensue can come as a shock. Assuming that you have been in a managerial position with your own team for a credible period of time, then you will know that taking all the responsibility on board can be a
daunting prospect.

If promotion into a senior role is really what you want, then you need to make sure that you are completely prepared, and this means in all aspects of the role. It's a good idea to make a note of all the skills that you are likely to need including any of those connected specifically to the role in question. This way you will comprehend the full remit of the position and be one step ahead.

• Are you good with people? You need to be able to build rapport with others of all levels and yet still maintain that difficult stance of professional friendliness?

• Do you have good communication skills? Translating your thoughts to others clearly and succinctly is imperative. Are you comfortable giving presentations at a high level or speaking out to the whole business?

• Are you able to delegate? The key is to discover the individual strengths of those who report into you. When you are in a senior role, you can’t expect to deal with all that comes your way, you have to lead by example, and effective leadership is paramount.

• Can you work under pressure? You are likely to have to work longer hours and to be on call during unsociable times. Your workload may also increase significantly calling for greater time management skills.

• Do you enjoy making tough decisions? You may be called upon to make very difficult decisions that include redundancies, disciplinary actions as well as overseeing financial incentives.

When you make your list, are there are any areas in which you feel unsure? Business communications are normally an area that many people struggle with when they are promoted as well as having to cope with rising resentment from others who had eyed up the same position. You have to develop a thick skin and forget about being someone’s friend. You have to be fair, honest, dedicated, determined and able to drive the business forward on your own merits.

For effective leadership, you have to keep your finger on the pulse and to be honest with yourself. Don’t put yourself at a disadvantage right from the off, consider leadership development programs if you have skills that need to be polished. Evelyn Olivares- Business and NLP coach knows only too well the difficulties that some people face when they finally get their promotion, she says that, ‘streamlining values and organizational goals are but two important aspects for someone in a leadership position. They have to be confident at making decisions quickly. Be dedicated to the outcomes. There’s a lot to learn.’

With this in mind, it makes sense to fully understand and be prepared for all the challenges that lie ahead. If you feel confident, it really can become a dream role.
